Ronnie Vergnolle grew up roaming barefoot through the South Carolina wilderness. From the mountains to the coast, the natural world was never merely a backdrop to his childhood; it was a living presence that inspired curiosity, reverence, and a sense of mystical connection.
As modern life became faster and more digital, that early connection receded. Ronnie pursued education, law, and entrepreneurship, building a successful career while the call of rivers, oceans, and untamed places remained just beneath the surface.
Ronnie earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from The Citadel and later received his J.D. and LL.M. from Duke University School of Law. He went on to pursue an entrepreneurial career that culminated in the sale of the business he created with his wife, Britt.
With the freedom to reconsider what came next, Ronnie returned to the question that had followed him since childhood: What happens when human beings lose their connection with nature—and what might they recover by seeking it again?
Ronnie set out on a three-year fishing journey to some of the most remote places in the world. He has now fished on six continents and continues to explore the world of big-game adventure fishing. These journeys brought him face to face with extraordinary fish, demanding waters, distinct cultures, and the moral code shared by true fishermen: respect what is wild, take only what is needed, and let the great ones glide.
Along the way, Ronnie met scallywags, modern-day pirates, pirate hunters, pretenders and bad-ass fisherman, all of whom regaled him with their own tall tales of fishing and adventure. The adventures in The Book of Ribbner are all based on true tales he’s witnessed, experienced or heard from other fisherman and guides. To know another’s life is to understand better your own.
